Bamboo Fabric

A Beginner's Guide to Bamboo Fabric

We adore bamboo; we can't help it. But we understand that many of you might not know all that much about this versatile and luxurious material, so we thought we'd deep dive into everything you need to know about bamboo fabric and its characteristics.

Several textile varieties fall under the general term "bamboo fabric." Textiles manufactured from the bamboo plant have existed for thousands of years. Still, in the last few decades, manufacturers have perfected the process of transforming this hardy and fast-growing wood into a useable and sellable fabric.

Bamboo is fast emerging as the next revolution in the fabric world. The extraordinary growth in bamboo fabric is because:

  • It's 100% natural and eco-friendly
  • It requires less water to cultivate bamboo
  • It is biodegradable
  • It's softer and more moisture-wicking than cotton.

One of the most incredible features of bamboo fabric is its intrinsic versatility. From clothing to pillows and luxurious bedding, bamboo is lightweight, moisture-wicking, versatile, and perfect for the Australian climate.

How can you use bamboo fabric?

Bamboo fabric is a beautiful alternative to traditional cotton fabric. The bonus with bamboo is the list of its notable beneficial attributes. It is breathable, stretchier than cotton, and easy to weave into fabrics with high thread counts. The nature of bamboo's texture often results in thinner textiles than cotton counterparts while remaining similar or greater in tensility.

Due to its softness and durability, this fabric is perfect for bedding and clothing.

What are the benefits of bamboo fabric?

Antibacterial: the bamboo plant possesses natural antibacterial properties. These properties lend it to manufacturing activewear and bedding, as it naturally eliminates odours. Unlike polyester or other synthetic fabrics, bamboo fabric products have no issue with body odour.

Thermoregulating: bamboo fabric is thermoregulating, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. This ability to adapt to the conditions makes bamboo bedding the ultimate choice for the Australian climate.

Moisture wicking: bamboo has impressive moisture-wicking properties, absorbing sweat and keeping you dry. This moisture-wicking ability will keep you cool throughout hot summer nights. We love using bamboo top sheets over the hotter months.

Eco-friendly: one of the best parts about growing bamboo is the sheer speed at which it regenerates. Bamboo is a grass and is considered one of the most eco-friendly fibres on the planet. Bamboo regrows and spreads itself without much human intervention, irrigation or pesticides. Most gardeners consider bamboo an invasive pest due to its fast-growing nature!

Strong and Durable: bamboo fabric is a robust fibre and is more durable than cotton. It provides incredible value for money as it retains its colour for longer compared to cotton. Bamboo bedding also requires less frequent washing than its cotton alternative.

Bamboo Bedding Guide

While we recommend always following our products' care label, here are some general guidelines for caring for your bamboo items.

Washing bamboo bedding

Like any other natural fibre, we suggest washing your bamboo bedding on a delicate, cold cycle, using a gentle detergent before hanging it to dry in the shade. If you can, consider hanging on the line without laundry pegs, which can leave marks.

Bamboo fibres are resilient and naturally antimicrobial, but harsh chemicals like bleach and fabric softener can degrade the structure, leaving sheets discoloured and limp. Most of all, it is essential to steer clear of velcro, zips, or denim when washing your bamboo clothes.

These could cause damage or pilling if washed together. If you use a dryer, we recommend choosing a low delicate setting, removing the sheets when the cycle ends, and folding immediately.

Iron bamboo fabric

Hanging or steaming your bamboo sheets and pillowcases should be enough to drop out minor creases.

However, if your bedding is wrinkly after being stored in the laundry cupboard, you can turn your garments inside out and iron them out on low heat. Put a clean tea towel between the iron and the fabric to avoid discolouration.

Removing stains from bamboo bedding

If you find a stain on your bamboo bedding, try pre-treating it with a small amount of gentle detergent or stain remover. Let it soak for a few minutes before washing according to care instructions.

Remember that bleach will harm the natural bamboo fibres, so if you find a stubborn stain, soak your sheets in a chlorine-free enzyme cleaner (3% hydrogen peroxide works) for 15 minutes before washing. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to use bleach, as this could permanently damage the fabric.

Storing bamboo bedding

Once your gorgeous sheetspillowcases, and duvet covers are clean and dry, we recommend neatly folding them to minimise wrinkles.
